Internships in Computer Modeling and Simulation

Context

The internships proposed in this call will take place within the ACROSS international laboratory in Hanoi (http://across-lab.org) which undertakes research on the use of computer models and simulation for the participatory management of large socio-ecosystems in Vietnam. In 2026, ACROSS is conducting a number of exciting projects including several significant international research programs, such as:

  • SIMPLE (Sustainability Issues Multiverse for building Participatory Learning Environments), focusing on virtual reality, human–machine interaction, and participatory approaches for environmental sciences.
  • STAR-FARM (Smart Agro-ecological Transformation of Farming Systems towards Resilience and Sustainability in Middle and Coastal Zones of the Vietnam Mekong Delta), supporting the smart agroecological transformation of farming systems in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta and strengthening resilience to climate change and environmental degradation.
  • RIVERS (Rich Immersive Virtual Environments for Education using Remote Sensing): escalating threat of flood risk in Southeast Asia and France intensified by climate change.
  • Moov’ Hanoi, aiming to improve the attractiveness of public transportation, contribute to the creation of an intermodal mobility network, and promote sustainable mobility policies in Hanoi.
  • ATEsT (Approche Transdisciplinaire des risques Émergents sur un Territoire), which seeks to rethink crisis management and emerging risk analysis in the context of accelerating climate change, combining environmental modeling, social dynamics, and decision-support tools.

Many of these projects rely on agent-based modeling, socio-environmental simulations, participatory tools, and immersive visualization. We seek excellent candidates in computer science, data science, modeling, AI, UX, or VR development for 3- to 6-month Bachelor or Master internships.

Topics

Interns will contribute to one or several ACROSS subjects depending on their skills and interests. All subjects ideally involve or integrate the GAMA platform (https://gama-platform.org) as a central modeling environment.

  1. Implementation in GAMA of computer models linked with the major projects of the team: adaptation to climate-change, urban development and planning, agroecological transitions and farming systems modeling, pollution and air-quality control, fisheries and irrigation systems management, stakeholder-oriented participatory simulations, etc
  2. Development of the GAMA platform, including implementation of automated workflows for benchmarking, unit testing, and continuous integration. Development can target the GAMA core , model library, the GAMA server, and the interface layers with Python/JavaScript clients, ensuring robust, maintainable, and scalable platform architecture for modeling and simulation.
  3. Development of tools to enhance visualization and interaction with the GAMA platform, including integration with Unity for 3D/VR environments, web-based dashboards for remote control and visualization, user-friendly modeling interfaces, graphical editors and GUIs, as well as tangible interfaces enabling physical interaction, all designed to facilitate end-user learning, engagement, and immersive experiences.
  4. Development of extensions to GAMA for coupling it with AI tools for automated model generation from descriptions, automated comments or generation of code, AI-generated visualization, etc
  5. Development of low-Tech and frugal VR development to maximize accessibility and impact of educational tools. This includes porting high-fidelity VR experiences to smartphones and cardboard viewers and creating tangible interfaces, enabling immersive learning in resource-constrained or low-tech environments.

Requirements

An interest in modeling and simulation of complex systems, data science, or AI is important; knowledge of various computer languages would be appreciated, especially Java for development on the GAMA platform.
Fluency in English is required.

Internship

The candidates will be hosted full-time or half-time in ACROSS during the internship (which can last between 3 to 6 months, starting anytime in 2026, with possibilities of extension).  A financial support (internship allowance), training and working facilities (computer, etc.) will be provided.

Contact

If you are interested and would like to apply, please send a CV and a cover letter to across@tlu.edu.vn. All applications will be processed on a rolling basis (no specific deadline) and interviews will be held with the most interesting profiles.

Available Positions

Below is a list of specific subjects. If you don’t find a match but are motivated to contribute to these topics with a proposal of your own, we’re open to it. We regularly interview promising candidates and are happy to co-design an internship that aligns with your skills, interests, and our research priorities.

  1. Internships: Low-Tech VR, Frugal Innovation & Educational Game Design
  2. Internships: Moov’Hanoi – Improving knowledge of mobility practices in Hanoi
  3. Internships: Development of a CI/CD testing tools for GAMA
  4. Internships: Applying reinforcement learning to calibrate a multi-agent serious game — with a case study on waste management.
