Internships: Moov’Hanoi – Improving knowledge of mobility practices in Hanoi

Context

In Hanoi, a city of over 7 million inhabitants, motorcycles account for nearly 73% of trips, and the number of light vehicles is rapidly increasing, causing pollution, congestion, noise, and road safety issues. To address these challenges, local authorities are developing an ambitious metro network, with several lines already operational and more planned by 2040.

The Moov’Hanoi project, launched in 2023 by the Île-de-France Region and the Hanoi People’s Committee with support from AFD, aims to support the expansion of public transport, particularly the metro, by improving service offerings and encouraging user adoption. The project uses multiple levers, including better understanding of mobility practices, bus feeder structuring to metro stations, intermodality around stations, and technical assistance to local authorities.

Within this framework, the work conducted with IRD addresses a central challenge: the lack of reliable mobility data hinders the development of effective transport policies. The goal is to demonstrate the potential of data production, modeling, and visualization to support policies promoting modal shift toward public transport and active mobility.

Topics

As part of the work conducted with IRD, the internship will focus on developing a simple and pedagogical visualization of modal shift scenarios, illustrating the benefits of gradually shifting to public transport (bus, metro) and active modes (walking, cycling). The goal is to intuitively represent the expected effects on key indicators (subject to data availability), including: reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, decrease in noise pollution, relief of traffic congestion, improvement of travel times

For several months, partners have converged on the idea of a digital and tangible platform to provide an interactive presentation of the modeling results. The objectives are to: encourage debate and discussion “around the table”, show the concrete impact of mobility policy choices, visually compare different scenarios and use synthetic indicators such as travel time, congestion, and emissions

Requirements

The internship will involve the development of a clean and up-to-date geographic information system (GIS) for Hanoi, with projections for the next seven years, coupled with traffic modeling using existing frameworks to simulate vehicle flows. It will also include modeling of the metro and bus networks, potentially leveraging GTFS data, and the implementation of a transport mode choice algorithm informed by previous studies. The work will encompass the development of interactive visualizations of scenarios, with identification of key parameters and scenario comparison, as well as integration of air quality and pollution indicators to assess the environmental impacts of modal shifts.

Internships

The candidates will be hosted in ACROSS during the internship (which can last between 3 to 6 months, starting anytime in 2026, with possibilities of extension).

A financial support (internship allowance), training and working facilities (computer, etc.) will be provided.
